Elwood, IL
Once you get clear of Joliet, you will start on a long trip through a bunch of rural towns. It's great to ride along Route 66 out of sight of the interstate hiways and get the feel that travelers of the Mother Road must have felt in decades past.
Elwood, which is the namesake of Elwood Blues of the Blues Brothers, is easy to miss. Go several miles past the Chicagoland Speedway and keep a lookout for a Heartland Bank on the right hand side. Take a right and follow it into Elwood. It is a nice little village. There are a couple of watering holes for a few cold ones, but be careful, locals say the police are stringent.
Elwood has Friday Cruise Nights from June through August featuring antique cars, music and refreshments.
Elwood participates in the Route 66 Red Carpet Corridor events each May.
