Avilla had a tumultuous Civil War record. Confederate raider Bloody Bill Anderson, who rode with Quantrill's Raiders, led a raid on Avilla's Union supporters and killed may of them. Later on, the Union army took control of Avilla and based a headquarters there. After the Civil War, Avilla prospered during reconstruction, and had many businesses and tradesmen in the 1870s. Prosperity continued well into the 20th century, but after I-44 bypassed Avilla, it went into quick decline and was a ghost town by the 1970s.
