Afton, OK
Afton began as a farming community, but gained prosperity as a railroad center and later through Route 66.
In 1956, Russell and Arlene Kay opened the Buffalo Ranch at the confluence of four US highways, including Route 66. The Kays lured travelers to their gift shop and restaurant by showing their heard of seven buffaloes. The heard grew to about 40 head. Other animals, like llamas and yaks, along with a petting zoo, were added. The Buffalo Ranch finally closed in 1997 and the structure was torn down in 2004 to make way for a convenience store.
Main St Afton is crumbling. All of the motels pictured are long closed. The Buffalo Ranch was closed and torn down in 1997. The site now has a convenience store.
