Lela, TX
October 16, 2023
Lela originally was called "Story." The town's name was changed to Lela in 1903 when Postmaster Bedford Bowers renamed it for his sister in law. In the mid-1940s, Lela was small, but getting along. It had five gas stations, a cafe' and a post office, but no motels.
There is nothing left to see in Lela except the sign on the Frontage Road telling you that you are there. It once had a rattlesnake exhibit with a "Rattlesnakes Exit Now" sign on I-40. That sign now is at the entrance to McLean.
