Bushland, TX

October 16, 2023

Bushland was founded in 1903 by William Henry Bush. He called it "Bush Stop." His wife later got him to change the name to "Bushland." The town never boomed. It peaked in the 1050.s, and since then the population has stayed at about 130.

Bushland is at the Eastern edge of the Llano Estacado, or Staked Plains, which is one of the largest natural grassland in the world. Legend has it that when Coronado was searching the West for the Lost City of Gold in 1541, the grass was so thick that he had to plant stakes into the ground to find his way out. For you Lonesome Dove fans, this is where Blue Duck escaped to after Gus McCrae saved Lori from having been kidnapped.

As you leave Amarillo on Indian Hill Rd, you will be just off the I-40 Frontage Rd. If you look to your left through the trees, you will see the Cadillac Ranch, the sculpture erected by Stanley Marsh in 1974 of 10 Cadillacs buried in a wheat field at an angle (supposedly the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza). The 10 cars represent each of the 10 tail fin styles Cadillac produced. You can walk out to the cars if you go to Bushland and double back on the Frontage Rd on the far side of I-40. The cars have all been vandalized over the years. The Cadillac Ranch is a truly odd deal.
