San Jon, NM
San Jon (pronounced San Hone) is a dusty little town that is almost completely abandoned along Route 66, but it once was a major ranch and farm supply center and was the largest town in Eastern New Mexico. As late as the mid-1940s, it was a favorite spot for cowboys to let off steam on Saturday nights.
There is a motel along I-40. Some friends of mine stayed there for under $30, and the owner bought beer and grilled burgers in the parking lot for everybody. They tell me it was a fun deal at a cheap price.
After crossing I-40 and following the road into San Jon, go right on 469/S Frontage Rd through town - Follow S Frontage Rd to I-40 Exit 335 and cross under I-40 - Be sure to go all the way to the end of Frontage Rd into Tucumcari; do not cross I-40 before then - Follow Bus 40 through Tucumcari
From the S Frontage Rd in San Jon, go left on Hwy 469 right before the Post Office (Be alert: there is no Hwy 469 sign going Eastbound) - Go under I-40 and go right on N Frontage Rd just before the D Hillon Fuel sign (Be alert, there is no sign designating the N Frontage Rd) - Follow the N Frontage Rd until it dead ends - Go right and get on I-40 - Get off I-40 at Exit 0 into Glenrio
