San Jon, NM

February 11, 2019
San Jon (pronounced San Hone) is a dusty little town that is almost completely abandoned along Route 66, but it once was a major ranch and farm supply center and was the largest town in Eastern New Mexico. As late as the mid-1940s, it was a favorite spot for cowboys to let off steam on Saturday nights.

There is a motel along I-40. Some friends of mine stayed there for under $30, and the owner bought beer and grilled burgers in the parking lot for everybody. They tell me it was a fun deal at a cheap price. mark
