Chambless, CA
Chambless is owned by Gus Lizalde, who bought it a couple of decades ago out of his love for cars and Route 66.
It was founded in the early 1920s. At its peak, it had many stores and service stations, and was a major stop on Route 66.
During WW II, General Patton trained soldiers for desert fighting in preparation for the North Africa campaign.
The abandoned Chambless Market is the best of the Route 66 relics.
A new saloon called Bolo Station recently has opened. It is biker friendly. It will be a good place to get refreshments while riding across the Mojave Desert.
Between Chambless and Amboy, look out for the Shoe Tree, where travelers have been tossing old shoes for years. It's located on an overpass on the left hand side of the road as you travel East to West.
Also between Chambless and Amboy, look for the ruins of the Roadrunner Retreat Cafe' and Station.
