Gillespie is a small but scenic town, and the ride on Route 66 is pleasant. Check out Chief's Bar and Grill.
Gillespie is the home of actor Howard Keel.
Each June it puts on Black Diamond Days, which is a three day festival celebrating coal miners.

from Gillespie:
From Macoupin in Gillespie, follow Hwy 4 - Just before Benld, go left following the 1926-1930 Route 66 sign - Follow the road around until it comes back to Hwy 4, then go left and follow Hwy 4 into Benld

Carlinville
from Gillespie:
From Gillespie, stay on Hwy 4 - Go right on Pine - Go left on Macoupin - Go right on Elm - Go on Hwy 4 going out of town - Go 5.5 miles and go left on Deerield Dr - Go left back on Hwy 4 and follow it to Carlinville
