Braceville, IL
Braceville once was a bustling city of around 3,500 people. In the 1880s it boasted six general stores, two banks, a hotel and 18 other retail businesses. In 1910, workers at the Braceville Coal Company went on strike and the Company shut down. The town never has fully recovered, and today only about 800 people remain.
Travelers used to be able to stop by J.K. Harrison's Pub & Grill for good food and a cold one. It closed and reopened as the Wicked Cricket. It's a nice place with a good bar and good food.
Braceville participates in the Route 66 Red Carpet Corridor events each May.
