Chatham, IL

< p>

Chatham is a town of about 12,000 residents just west of Springfield. It boasts of hosting the annual Illinios Champion Cowchip Throw (you can't make this stuff up!).

The 1926-1930 route I have given you bypasses Downtown Chatham. You can loop around to the main drag and hit a couple of good bars on  E Mulberry St..

On your way to Auburn, keep a lookout for Snell and Curran Rd. Take a right to go over a well preserved portion of Route 66 made of brick. It's a bit bumpy on a motorcycle, but worth the trip.

When you get back to Highway 4, look to the left to see an old bridge that's closed to traffic. Even so, it is passable easily on a motorcycle. This detour is short and also worth the trip.

Westbound
from Chatham:
Auburn

Follow Hwy 4 out of Chatham - Watch for the Route 66 Sign and take a right onto Snell Rd (which will become brick) - Follow Snell, which becomes Curran, back to Hwy 4 - Go right on Hwy 4 to Auburn

Eastbound
from Chatham:
Springfield

From Chatham, go two miles out of town on Hwy 4 - Go right on Woodside Dr - Go left on Chatham Rd into Springfield - Go right on Wabash - Go left on Macarthur - Go right on S Grand - Go left on 2nd - Go right on Capitol Ave - Go left on 9th St/Bus 55
