Heatonville, MO
October 16, 2023
Once you leave Spencer and rejoin Hwy 96, you will go through a string of ghost towns or near ghost towns. The first of these will be Heatonville, which was founded in the 1880s. It thrived during the heyday of Route 66, but like so many other towns, withered away after I-44 bypassed Route 66.
Today, there are a few homes and a Friendship Assembly Church, along with a few old Route 66 relics, including the abandoned stone 1936 D L Morris Garage and Station.
