Carterville, MO
Carterville is just outside of Joplin and is bigger than the towns you have been going through. At one time, it was a major mining community, but went into decline after WW I when lead and zinc mines were closed. By the mid-1940s it was a near ghost town.
Today, there is an Ice Cream parlor and Superman Museum that is pretty unique, but it is only open seasonally.
