Fort Reno, OK

October 16, 2023

Fort Reno was established in 1875 to support the US Army after a Cheyenne uprising in 1874. After the Indian wars concluded, Fort Reno operated to protect the so called Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole)from the Plains Indians. The Ninth Cavalry of Buffalo Soldiers was stationed there.

Fort Reno was abandoned in 1908 after Oklahoma was admitted as a state in 1907. It remained a Cavalry remount station until 1949.

It was used as a prisoner of war camp during WW II, and some of the prisoners are buried there.

Today, Fort Reno, in addition to being a museum, is home to the US Department of Agriculture's Grazinglands Research Laboratory.

It doesn't take long to go through the Fort, and it's worth the visit. If you get there outside of it's business hours, you can edge your bike past the gate and ride around. You just won't be able to get into any of the buildings.
