Calumet, OK
The ride from Fort Reno to Calumet follows a narrow ribbon of road mostly out of sight of I-40. The landscape is dominated by farms and grasslands, along with occasional businesses. You have the feel you are in the middle of nowhere, and for the most part, you are. It's easy to imagine what it must have been like to travel Route 66 along this beautiful but lonesome stretch of road on the way to better times in the West.
Calumet is a sleepy farming community with a few restaurants and markets. Jonnies Grill is one of the main hang outs. Rumors Bar is now called The Stack. I haven't been in there because it's never neen open when I've gone by. Davidson's Saloon next still is deader than Kelsey's nuts.
There are some interesting murals on the sides of the downtown buildings worth stopping to see.
Although Calumet is small, it gets quite a bit of trucking traffic for the transportation of heavy farm equipment and crops.
