Geary, OK
Geary once was a bustling place, but there is not much left today. The landmark you will see on Route 66 is the abandoned Diamond Supper Club sign.
Downtown there is a 1893 wooden jail. It doesn't look very comfortable.
Jesse Chisholm, who blazed the Chisholm Trail, is buried nearby. It's not on Route 66, but if you are a Western history buff, this is a remote must stop spot. It's hard to find because the signs are somewhere between nonexistent and incorrect. It took me an afternoon, but here's how I got there:
Go about a mile out of Downtown on N 281 - Go right at a red sign pointing the way to the grave site and cross some RR tracks - Go about a quarter mile to a Stop sign - There will be a blue sign for the grave site - Go left to a four way stop - Go right following the paved road - Go until you cross a bridge and take a left onto a dirt road - Go about two miles and go left on another dirt road at a blue Jesse Chisholm Grave Site sign - This is a rough road, but you will find the grave site after about a quarter of a mile.
Jesse Chisholm should not be confused with John Chisum, the New Mexico rancher who participated in the Lincoln County War that brought Billy the Kid to fame. John Chisum never sent a cow up the Chisholm Trail. Instead, he sent his cattle over the Goodnight Loving Trail for sale in San Antonio.
From Geary, take a left at the Stop sign next to the abandoned Diamond Supper Club in Downtown onto Hwy 270/281 West toward Hinton Junction - Four miles out of town, watch for Spur 281/281 South (There is a Route 66 sign telling you to go straight; ignore that sign and go right; if you miss this turn, you will be on 281 East, which is the wrong way ; if you go over the long iron Pony Bridge across the South Canadian River, you will be going the right way) - Just before Hinton, there will be a curve by a roadside rest stop showing 281 to the left - Go right onto Route 66 (There is no Route 66 Shield sign, but there is a small Route 66 Street sign) - Stay on Route 66 to Hydro
Follow Hwy 281 into Geary, and go right on Hwy 270 N to Calumet
