Groom, TX
Groom features two Route 66 attractions; one is old and one new.
The older attraction is the tilted Britton Water Tower. The tower was built at an angle to attract attention. It may be my imagination, but it seems to be even more tilted that it used to be. In any event, the rear legs do not have any contact with the ground.
The other attraction is the Giant Cross Of Our Lord Jesus Christ, built in 1995. It is 191 feet tall and is claimed to be the tallest Christian cross in the Western Hemisphere. It is visited by more than 1,000 people per day. There are ancillary exhibits, including life size sculptures of Jesus and the two thieves and a monument to aborted babies since the Supreme Court's decision in Rowe v. Wade. It is open 24 hours a day. It is inspiring or creepy, depending on your viewpoint.
If you follow our route through town you won't find much on Route 66. At the Blessed Mary Restaurant, you pay what you want and proceeds go to charity.
