Conway, TX
Conway was founded in 1882, when the Lone Star School was established. It is supposed to be the first school of substance in the Texas Panhandle.
By the time Route 66 was commissioned, Conway had only about 25 residents. By 1939, it had about 125 residents. Route 66 must have helped things along, because it ultimately had about 175 residents, two grain elevators, four service stations, three cafes and a general store. Today,the population is under 20.
The Bug Ranch is in Conway. It is a group of buried V W Beetles lampooning the Cadillac Ranch outside of Amarillo. To get there, go right on Hwy 207 and follow it for a couple of hundred yards. Look to the left by the large "Motel/Cafe" sign.
From Conway, stay on Hwy 2161 - Go about 11 miles, and keep a lookout on I-40 for Exit 89 - At I-40 Exit 89, follow Hwy 2161 across I-40 and get on the Frontage Rd - Go straight at the Stop sign at Randall Rd - At the next Stop sign, go straight across all four lanes and continue on the Frontage Rd - At the Junction with Hwy 1912, go straight across onto 8th St - Go all the way to the end and go right on Avenue B - Go to the end of Avenue B past the underpass and go left onto Amarillo Blvd/Bus 40 - Stay on Amarillo Blvd/Bus 40 through the US 287 Junction. Go through Filmore and take a left on Taylor St. Go a few miles and then go right on 6th Ave.
From the Junction of hwy 2161 and Hwy 207 in Conway, go straight at S Frontage Rd - When Hwy 207 turns right at a caution light, stay straight on the Frontage Rd, which will become Bus 40 into Groom
