Thoreau, NM
Thoreau (pronounced Thuh-roo)is a bump in the road that was not named for Henry David (although some resources claim it was). It is located at the base of a beautiful red sandstone escarpment that continues North and West. You will be following these sublime formations nearly to the Arizona border.
Thoreau is a local trading center with craftsmen such as rug weavers, silversmiths, and turquoise jewelry artists. It has a strong Navajo influence, and many residents speak that language.
Roxanne Trout Heath wrote a book about the history of Thoreau in 1982 called Thoreau, Where the Trails Cross. I tried to find this book on the internet. While several book sites list it, I could not find a copy for sale.
Thoreau has the Red Mountain Market & Deli. It isn't always open.
