Winslow, AZ
Winslow has to be traveled both ways. Going East to to West you go one way on Third St, and going West to East it's one way on Second St. Second St seems to be busier.
Be sure to stop and have your picture taken on the corner of Second and Kinsley next to the statue by sculptor Ron Adamson, and also next to the fire engine red Flatbed Ford parked nearby. Across the street you can visit Dominique's on the Corner, which is one of the better souvenir places along Route 66.
Winslow is full of old Route 66 hotels and restaurants. The town is especially proud of La Posada Hotel, a 1928 hotel that was the last Harvey House built. It was closed in 1957 and was used as offices for the Santa Fe Railroad until 1994. It now once again operates as a hotel.
On your way to Two Guns, you'll pass the Meteor Crater, which is about six miles off of I-40. The Crater is 570 feet deep and a mile across. It was formed 50,000 years ago when a 60,000 ton meteor slammed into the countryside. You should decide whether it is worth it in time or money. It is on private property, and there is a pretty hefty fee to get in. Once in, there is an impressive museum you have you go through before you can actually see the Crater. They will give you some interesting literature about its origin and the unsuccessful search for the nickel of which the meteor was thought to be made. Once you get to the Crater, you can go on a walkway around part of the perimeter, but you can't go down into it. Although it's expensive and time consuming to visit, it really is pretty cool.
