Two Guns, AZ
Two Guns originally was opened as a tourist destination capitalizing on Canyon Diablo and the legend of Harry "Two Guns" Miller. The town had been named Canyon Lodge, but was renamed Two Guns after Miller, who was an Apache who had opened some tourist businesses in the Diablo Canyon area, including a zoo that claimed to have one of every "beast" in Arizona. Miller killed a neighbor who was operating a competing business. He pled self defense and was acquitted, even though it was determined that the victim had been unarmed. Miller later went to jail for defacing the grave marker of the man he killed, because it said "Killed by Indian Miller."
Two Guns was built near the real ghost town of Canyon Diablo, which was founded in 1881 as railroad construction camp. It was a rough town. The main street was named Hell Street, which at one time had 14 saloons, 10 gambling houses, four whore houses and two dance halls. There were frequent gunfights and robberies. The first sheriff assumed office at 3:00 one afternoon and was killed at 8:00 the same night. There were five more sheriffs, and none lived more than a month.
Canyon Diablo is now a ghost town, but the ruins remain and are accessible. Among the ruins is the 1913 Canyon Diablo Bridge, which was part of the original 1926 alignment of Route 66.
