Twin Arrows, AZ
Twin Arrows opened in about 1949 as the Canyon Padre Trading Post. The 20 foot tall Twin Arrows, which are made out of telephone poles, were constructed in 1954, and the Trading Post was renamed after its eye-popping new structures. In its heyday, there was a curio shop, gas station and diner. It remained a Route 66 staple until it closed in 1998. After closing, Twin Arrows deteriorated quickly.
In recent years, efforts have been underway to restore the site, which is on land leased by the Hopi Indian Tribe. The Twin Arrows have been repainted and the outer structure of the Trading Post has had a bit of a facelift. However, it is not open for business.
One of the Arrows recently was blown down in a wind storm.
The $200,000,000 Twin Arrows Navajo Casino opened in 2014. Maybe the casino traffic will encourage someone to fully restore this Route 66 icon
