Winona, AZ
When Bobby Troup was telling you how to get your kicks on Route 66, he warned "...don't forget Winona..." Well, it's hard to find these days. About all that's left is a long abandoned bridge.
Even so, the detour through Winona is worth it. You will be heading into Flagstaff through some beautiful pine woods with the mountains to your right and in front of you. The smell of the evergreens is one of the things tourists in cages will miss on this great stretch of road.
The altitude is high here. There is snow on the mountains year round. Even in the middle of the summer you will get a refreshing respite from the heat of the Arizona desert. While collecting content for this site, I rode through a snowstorm in late May of 2011. A cool ride in all respects.
