Ash Fork, AZ

October 16, 2023

Ash Fork is a sleepy little town known for selling flagstone. There are some vintage motels with cool signs, but the motels themselves are either closed or in questionable repair.

Like lots of Route 66 towns, the main drags are one way, so you need to go both ways to see the whole town. Ash Fork is not very big, and it won't take you long.

Traveling East to West, you will come across the DeSoto Salon, with it's distinctive DeSoto on the roof.

Going West to East, you will find the Oasis Lounge, which is the only bar in town. The Oasis is small, and the crowd is totally local, but it's a pretty good place.

Street signs at the West end of town will direct you to Route 66. This is a dead end road that leads to a Route 66 Museum. It has not been open when I passed by.

When you leave Ash Fork, you will be starting my favorite ride along Route 66. After a brief ride on I-40, you will head onto over 150 miles of original Route 66 that passes through a dozen little towns, many of which still have thriving motels, restaurants and shops. The road winds through rolling hills, beautiful grasslands and valleys, as well as evergreen forests. There are Burma Shave signs in and out of several towns. Almost all of the ride is out of sight of I-40, and by the end of this ride, you will be in California.

This is what motorcycles are all about. Enjoy!!
