Seligman, AZ
Seligman was founded in 1896 as a connecting point of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. The town is named after the Seligman Brothers, who were New York bankers who helped finance the railroad.
Seligman became a thriving Route 66 town until it was bypassed by I-40 in the late 1970s. The railroad discontinued service in 1985. Still, Seligman has survived, with may original Route 66 businesses still in operation.
Seligman is at one end of the annual Fun Run , in which vintage car owners cruise Route 66 between Seligman and Topock AZ.
Seligman is concentrated in two sections: One downtown area off of I-40; and another area on I-40. Both locations have several restaurants and motels, but the area away from I-40 is more interesting.
The Snow Cap is a famous road side burger joint in the downtown area that everybody wants to visit. It's a snapshot out of the past, but if you want to eat there, don't be in a hurry.
Down the street you will find the World Famous Black Cat Bar. It's a pretty good watering hole frequented by the locals, and things can get pretty lively in there on weekends. It opens at 9:00 in the morning and stays open until 2:00 am. They have only bar food. It's a good biker destination.
There are several motels and some cool souvenir shops in the downtown area, like the Rusty Bolt, which is three stores in one. The first two have Route 66 gifts and memorabilia. The third is biker accessories like leather jackets and boots.
Be sure to stop and see the Route 66 Motor Museum downtown.
Near I-40, the Road Kill Cafe' is a popular stop off. The locals all say that Lilo's across the street has the best food in town.
On the 35 mile ride from Seligman to Peach Springs, you will pass the Grand Canyon Caverns. I have not been there, but if I ever go, I'll put a small review here for you.
