Barstow, CA

October 16, 2023

Downtown Barstow originally was situated along the railroad tracks. Today, it follows Bus 15, in a long strait shot with virtually no turns all the way through town. It's a classic "strip" for crusing on a motorcycle or hot rod.

There many vintage motels with great neon signs, including a miniature Roy's sign at the now-closed Juan Pollo Mexican Restaurant. The El Rancho is built out of railroad ties.

There also are many murals depicting Barstow's history.

On the way into town, you will see a sign for the Harvey House Hotel. This was the 1911 Casa Del Desierto in the original Barstow Downtown area by the railroad tracks. It now serves as the Amtrak depot. The Barstow Mother Road Museum and the Western America Railroad Museum are there. It is a bit hard to find. Although there is a big sign as you come into town, it actually is almost all the way across town, and the sign directing you there is small. Be on the look out for a right hand turn near the Village Hotel sign.
