Lincoln, IL
When going through Lincoln be sure to follow the 1926 aligment. When entering Lincoln on Bus 55, look for a small Route 66 sign directing you to go left left following the old route. After that, follow the sigs for the 1926 alignment all the way through town.
Lincoln is the only town to take the name of the 16th president before he became president. It was named after Lincoln after he prepared the legal documents for the promoters of the site.
There is an impressive court house and a couple of pretty good bars that have nice locals and reasonable prices. Hallie's on the Square is a good one.
Guzzardo's Italian Villa on the Square is the local favorite restaurant. They give you a lot of food at a good price.
Make sure to go by The Mill, which is a 1929 restaurant that used to feature a windmill on the front. The plans are to restore it to a museum.
Also be sure to check out the World's Largest Covered Wagon and Giant Abe Lincoln at 1750 main St.
Route 66 winds past many well kept Victorian homes. Following Route 66 through Lincoln is a bit tricky, so pay close attention to the directions.
From Bus 55/Lincoln Parkway leaving Lincoln, go left following the Route 66 sign at Frontage Road Entrance toward Broadwell - At the Stop sign near town, go left on Frontage Rd and follow it to to Broadwell.
From Lincoln Bus 55/Lincoln Parkway, cross Salt Creek (the actual Creek, not a road) - Bear right following the Route 66 sign onto Stringer St (there is no Stringer St sign) - Go straight and past "The Mill" then go right on 5th St/Bus 55 - Bear left onto Logan - Go right on Keokuk - Go left on Kikapoo - Go right at the Junction of Lincoln Parkway - Follow the Frontage Rd onto Arch St in Atlanta
