Oklahoma City, OK

October 16, 2023

Oklahoma City is an oil town. There are wells pumping on the Capitol grounds. The dome on the Capitol building is new, being added in 2002.

OKC also is a cowboy town, and has the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum (aka the National Cowboy Hall of Fame) at 1700 N 63rd St.

Oklahoma City is a biker town too. Locals think the Thunder Roadhouse is the best biker spot in the OKC metro area. The restaurant is open late. There's off track betting from Remington Park, which is a premier horse racing facility. They also have the Big Dog and used Harley-Davidson Dealership where you can browse and watch the mechanics.

Hobo's is another Old School biker bar. On weekends there are bands and poker runs. Bring cash, because Hobo's doesn't take anything else.

Vick & Tim's is just west of Downtown Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Police love the bikers because the homeless dope addicts who used to gather at the vacant strip across the street have now found a new location. There is plenty of bike parking. Cages have to park on side streets. The parties on the weekends get pretty wild but it's all in good biker fun. The ceiling is covered with hanging bras donated by partying biker chicks. There usually is food on weekends from a huge smoker in the backyard.

Downtown Oklahoma City features Bricktown, which has lots of restored houses that now have restaurants and bars. The minor league baseball Oklahoma City Red Hawks play in Bricktown Park.

Mickey Mantle's Steak House at 7 S Mickey Mantle Dr has pricey but good food and lots of Mantle memorabilia.

There are several good hotels within walking distance, including the Bricktown Hotel;the Sheraton; and the Renaissance Hotel. The Skirvin Plaza Hilton is expensive, but it is a great early 20th century hotel.

At 742 W Britton Rd, you will find the Owl Court, which has a 1934 gas station. There have been rumors of restoration but I haven't seen any progress.

The Western Trails Trading Post at 9100 N Western Ave is a cool old structure that still sells Route 66 antiques. There is live music on weekends.

You also will pass the Will Rogers Theater at 4322 N Western Ave.

Just after you turn off of Western Ave onto 23rd St, you will find the Braum's Giant Milk Bottle at 2426 N Classen. It sits atop a 350 square foot building constructed in 1930 to house Milk Bottle Grocery. The giant milk bottle was added in about 1948. Today, the Saigon Baguette Restaurant is in this small building.

The 1910 Kamp's Grocery building is across the street.
