Sayre, OK
Sayre has the Western Motel, which has a terrific neon sign. There also is the Route 66 Bar, which has a nice Route 66 mural. Owl Drugs has the largerst antique soda fountain in Oklahoma. City Hall is in an early 20th century bank building.
The Beckham County Courthouse was featured in The Grapes of Wrath.
On the corner of 4th and Elm, there is a passageway that was built so pedestrians could walk under the street to avoid heavy Route 66 traffic.
A few miles from Sayre (not on Route 66) you can visit the Washita Battlefield Historic Site. Washita is where George Custer and the 7th Cavalry attacked a campground of Cheyenne Indians consisting mostly of old men, women and children. Black Kettle was killed. This battle, which was Custer's only victory in the Plains Indian wars, was largely viewed by Custer's contemporaries as an unjustified massacre of peaceful Indians.
