Pecos, NM

October 16, 2023

Pecos is located on a mountain pass that has been used by travelers for centuries, including by nomadic Indian tribes.

Pecos is a mix of long standing businesses that are thriving, and crumbling homes and abandoned store fronts.

The Casa De Herrera Restaurant and Lounge seems to be a good place to stop, eat and drink.

Adelo's Town & Country Store has it all. They have "Groceries, Meats, Hardware & Building Supplies, Clothing, Dry Goods and an ATM Machine," as well as Liquor. There is a Shell station next door.

Be sure to check out the Giant statue of a Mexican at the Pecos Trading Post.

Pecos is near the Pecos National Historic Site. This settlement existed long before the Spanish came to New Mexico and long before it was called Pecos or was known as a pueblo. It was a center of trading with the Plains Indians. At one time it had 2,000 residents. It was abandoned by the Indians in the early 1800s. Today there is a self-guided walking tour through two Spanish missions and some ancient ruins.

The ride from Pecos to Glorieta is one of the nicest portions of this section of Route 66. Although the ride is not long, it is picturesque without much of the decaying and abandoned buildings present along much of New Mexico's Route 66.

Along the way, you will pass Griego's Market and Liquors/Nash's Night Club and Lounge. I have been to the Market, which is a good place to stop for a snack and gas. I have not been to the Night Club, but hey, you can't go wrong with a bar.
